Skills Focussed:
CATCHING: - One-hand grab (2.3)
THROWING: - Hammer (1.3), - Scoober (1.4), - Blade (1.7)
Concepts to know before the drill:
Drill Focus: Develop confident and controlled one-handed catching technique
Set-up:
- Players in pairs, 10 meters apart
Drill Flow:
- Thrower sends off-target throws just out of two-hand range
- Include hammers, blades, or fast passes
- Receiver must catch with one hand only
Coaching Points:
- Don’t allow regular chest-height passes — throws should force side/reach catches
- Thumb Positioning (try to keep thumb close to the shoulder)
Catch below shoulder = thumb-up
Catch above shoulder = thumb-down
- Which Hand To Use: Use nearest hand if defender is close
For fast throws, use hand which allows to have the palm behind disc"
Progression/Regression:
- Combine with Two-hand Catching Drill: Use two hands when reachable and one hand only when fully stretched
- Awareness of disc spin and catch positioning
