Concepts to know before doing the drill: - Basic Throwing and Catching Technique
Drill Focus:
- Throwing in front of the thrower and imagine space
- Throwing techniques
- Attacking the disc while catching "
Set-up:
- Players work in groups of three.
- Create a square playing area, 10β12 meters wide, with cones marking the corners.
- Each player stands at a cone, leaving one cone open.
- The player counter-clockwise from the open cone starts with the disc."
Drill-Flow:
- The player without the disc (next to the open cone) runs toward the open cone.
- The thrower times their pass so the disc arrives just as the runner reaches the open space, without them slowing down.
- After catching, the receiver becomes the next thrower, continuing the pattern.
- All throws should travel along the outside of the square:
Right-handed throwers β backhand throws.
Left-handed throwers β forehand throws.
- Midway through, switch throwing direction (counter-clockwise).
- Now right-handed throwers use forehands, making the drill more challenging.
Coaching Points:
- Ensure throws always move around the outside of the square (simulate throwing around a defender).
- Watch for runners starting too early; they should move almost simultaneously with the throw.
- Reinforce correct throwing technique from earlier drills (backhand/forehand mechanics).
- Encourage timing: the receiver should catch the disc in stride, without stopping.
