Concepts to know before doing the drill:
Drill Focus:
- Understanding the importance of Dump Pass
- When to do a dump pass
- How to do dump pass
- Position and role of the receiving handler
- Practice realistic sideline dump scenarios where the dump must create space using upfield cuts and double movements, while the thrower learns to time fakes and passes based on defender positioning.
Set-up:
- Groups of 4 players per station: Thrower, Marker, Dump, Dump Defender.
- No cones required.
- Distance: Dump begins roughly 10 meters from the thrower, free to choose initial positioning.
Drill-flow:
- Groups of 4 players per station: Thrower, Marker, Dump, Dump Defender.
- No cones required.
- Distance: Dump begins roughly 10 meters from the thrower, free to choose initial positioning.
- Rotation: After each rep, Dump becomes thrower and thrower becomes dump. Change offense & Defense after few reps.
Coaching Points:
- Dump: Avoid cutting into the forbidden region (behind thrower) unless as last resort. Use long, committed cuts or jab steps—short, indecisive movements are ineffective.
After catching, be ready to fake new threats (swing, break, or deep).
A dump on the closed side should go forward a few meters, while a dump on the open side should go backward a bit.
- Thrower: Use fakes to trigger dump’s movement. Adjust throw type: Floaty into space if defender is inside. Hit in stride if defender is outside.
- Defender:
Stay low & balanced, deny both threats. Vary positioning (inside/outside) to challenge offense.
Progression/Regression:
- Start with a pass from the middle to the sideline thrower to make the drill dynamic.
- Add a continuation deep cut after the dump receives, simulating full game progression.
- Allow defenders to use body positioning to force dumps into unfavorable spaces.
- When players know dump procedures on both the closed and open side, then an advanced version can be done where the thrower marker decides the force at the last moment and then the dump has to reposition accordingly.
