Concepts to know before doing the drill:
Drill Focus:
Set-up:
- Group of 6–12 players
- One experienced thrower with multiple discs
- Two cones placed at 14m and 18m from the thrower
- 1 offensive + 1 defensive player active per rep
Drill-flow:
- Offensive player begins with a full-speed deep cut (Run 1)
- Defender marks and chases
- As the offensive player enters the zone between the two cones, they decide:
- Option A – Continue Deep → thrower sends a long pass
Option B – Cut Back In → thrower hits them on the under cut
- Both players jog back to the line after the throw
- Players rotate through both offense and defense roles
Coaching Points:
- No hesitation: No indecisive cutting between cones. Players must decide quickly — either commit to the deep or cut in immediately
- Disguise intentions: Start all cuts at full speed — don’t slow down before changing direction
- Mix up decisions: Don’t always go deep. Encourage varied choices to simulate realistic scenarios
- Defensive reads: If players always go deep, defenders should be coached to anticipate and front
Progression/Regression:
- P: Players start deep, then cut under, and either:
Continue coming under Or double back deep (requires strong change of pace and decision-making)
- P: Marker can be added for the thrower as well maintaiing a force. This way cutter not only has to create gap with the defender but find space for the pass as well. (page 69 UTM)
-R: Marker for cutter can also be removed.
