Concepts to know before doing the drill:
- Basic Rules of Ultimate
- Basic Throwing with pivot and Catching
- Open and break side
- Different positions in offense
- Maintaining force
- Basic marking for thrower and non-thrower
Drill Focus:
How to dump to the open side
Set-Up:
- 4 players per group: 2 offense, 2 defense
- Thrower starts with disc, dump on open side
- Defense checks in the disc

Drill Flow:
- Thrower fakes a forward pass.
- Dump runs behind the thrower (Option 1).
- If the defender commits, dump chop stops and cuts forward (Option 2).
- Thrower chooses: Inside forward throw (Option 2), or Dump reset behind (Option 1)
- Offense Wins If: Inside throw is completed, dump is in strong position OR Dump reset is completed with a plan to break/continue
- Defense Wins If: Neither option succeeds
Coaching Points:
- Dump: Never turn while thrower is in a throwing motion
-Only turn upfield if thrower clearly fakes and holds the disc
- The idea of this drill is to prevent getting the disc on the line. Never dump behind near the sideline without a follow-up plan
- The dump positions himself not just on a horizontal line with the thrower, but
about two meters behind it which helps to get the upfield pass and to prevent defender from poaching.
Progression/Regression:
- Add cutter + defender
If Option 1: cutter cuts deep or for inside break. If Option 2: cutter receives break on closed side
- When players know dump procedures on both the closed and open side, then an advanced version can be done where the thrower marker decides the force at the last moment and then the dump has to reposition accordingly.
