Training both the offense in quick continuation and the defense in maintaining field sense.
Set-up:
Group Size: 6 players per group (2 handlers, 2 cutters, 2 defenders).
Field Layout: Handlers start at the brick mark or a set line.
Cutters set up 10–30 meters away, with defenders marking them.
Drill-Flow:
Initial Phase: One cutter initiates an in-cut; the other sets up a complementary deep cut. The handler throws to the in-cut.
Give-and-Go Action: The cutter who received the disc quickly dumps it back to a handler (who should approach at an angle, not directly). After dumping, the cutter immediately accelerates for a continuation cut (usually deep) while the second cutter adjusts to create space.
Defensive Challenge: Defenders apply tight person defense and may attempt switches when appropriate. Eye contact before and during the drill is encouraged for switches to be effective.
Keep the deep cut option closed for few initial reps. The cutter still goes deep and the handler can fake the throw.
Coaching Points:
For Offense: Cutters must stagger cuts and maintain spacing to avoid crowding. After dumping, accelerate into the continuation cut—do not jog. Handlers should keep the disc moving with quick decisions (stall count of 4 is recommended).
For Defense: Maintain field awareness; anticipate switches rather than reacting too late. It’s the task of the defenders to reduce the throwing options of the offense as much as they can. While doing so, they should try to keep their field sense, applying switches wherever possible. Switch only when it clearly shuts down an option. Poor switches can leave cutters free. Communicate early and use eye contact before cuts develop
