Concepts to know before doing the drill: Rules of Ultimate & Basic catching and throwing
Drill Focus: Improve quick passing, disc processing under pressure, and team offensive/defensive strategies in a small-sided, competitive format.
Set-up:
Field: Square, 10×10 meters
Teams: 3 players per team (substitutions rotate in)
Disc: 1 disc
Stall Count: 5 seconds
How to Play:
Two teams (3v3) play inside the square.
Scoring Rule: The offense scores a point if they complete five passes in a row.
After scoring, the winning team stays on. The losing team is replaced by a new team waiting on the sideline.
The new team starts with the disc for the next round.
Coaching Points:
Offensive Strategy: Use a mini vertical stack across the square. Focus on thrower-initiated passes into open space. Upon catching, immediately fake to keep the marker off-balance, instead of pausing to scan.
Defensive Strategy: Force to a corner and try to trap the offense. Active hands and positioning make a big difference in this small field.
Progression/Regression:
P: Increase Difficulty: Require 7–8 passes to score, or reduce the stall count to 3–4 seconds.
Beginner-Friendly Modification: Add a wild player (always on offense → 4v3). Use a higher stall count (8–10) or remove the stall count.
Dual-Disc Chaos Variation: Make the field slightly bigger. Play 4v4 with two discs in play simultaneously. Scoring: +1 for a completed pass, −10 for a turnover (disc returned to the original team). First team to 30 wins.
